RETROWOOD: The Return of Cassara Pt. 2

 One of the great things about doing figure drawing in LA is that there was never any shortage of great models who were attractive and knew how to pose dramatically. And at one point, in the same way that artists did jam sessions, the models had a late night venue where several of them would gather and put on a theme workshop: Sexy Nurses, Vampire Girls, Gypsy Dancers. At one of these two of my favorite models showed up as Siamese twins...and I immediately thought, there has got to be a story in this. There was at is morphed into Gypsy Twins, the prequel to this story your reading here.  I would often leave these workshops and laugh out loud on the way home, thinking "this is the reason I became an artist." Below Sara and Cassandra posing as the twins.

 What you see on the boards in these two posts is one act of the GI Joe episode, or approximately one third of the show. Once we were given the script, we were usually given two weeks to turn around the work. It rarely took me more than a week...which is why I liked to do a lot of the work at home. lol. Working in comics really forced your to hone your drawing skills and deal with tight deadlines, so working in animation at the time, the workload was considerably easier and better paying.  The interesting thing was that when the film would come back from the overseas studios that had been animating it, we discovered they were pretty much just tracing everything off our boards rather than trying to draw on model...so if I did an episode, everyone would immediately recognize it as mine, and this held true for all the artists. GIJoe -A Real American Hero storyboard Pt. 1

 Soon after I moved to California from Indiana in 1985 I started working in animation and doing less and less work for comics. My first staff job was working at Marvel Production and doing boards mostly for the GI Joe series. Since I had worked a couple of year on the GI Joe comic book series, I was familiar with the concept and most of the characters. I liked the people I was working with, the pay was great, and the job left me plenty of time to work on my own. Almost the perfect job, if there is one. Here is one of the many boards I did for the series.   The first page was a mock cover I always did to amuse my directors. Storyboards:From Scribble to Illustration.

As the selection of my boards from the Chronicles of Narnia films  below will demonstrate, storyboards can be executed in the form of the simplest doodles to finished illustration. How far you take the drawing process is of much less importance than the information you are trying to express. I was amused to read somewhere that often a separate crew of board artists were sometimes used expressly to create boards to be used only in "The Making Of" books that would be merchandised with blockbuster films. I don't know if I ever heard that confirmed. In the first drawing below there were some corrections needed on a section in the first film where Lucy meets Mr. Tumnus. I quickly thumbnailed my suggestions and showed them to the director who approved them.
