SKYWALKER

Image
Back in the 70's Mike Friedrich introduced his "ground level" ( not to be confused with Underground) comic book, Star*Reach for which I did several stories. George Lucas was reader of the comics, and that led him to requesting Howard Chaykin to do the comic book adaptations at Marvel. He obviously saw this story...hence the name Luke Skywalker. Since I had stolen the name from the Buffy St. Marie song, Starwalker, I couldn't really complain....I'm pretty much flattered.  The stories were great fun to do. Steve Englehart did a magnificent job of writing the dialogue. Enclosed is a slightly censored version, to meet blog standards,  of the story.Best, Mike

Storyboards:From Scribble to Illustration.

As the selection of my boards from the Chronicles of Narnia films  below will demonstrate, storyboards can be executed in the form of the simplest doodles to finished illustration. How far you take the drawing process is of much less importance than the information you are trying to express. I was amused to read somewhere that often a separate crew of board artists were sometimes used expressly to create boards to be used only in "The Making Of" books that would be merchandised with blockbuster films. I don't know if I ever heard that confirmed. In the first drawing below there were some corrections needed on a section in the first film where Lucy meets Mr. Tumnus. I quickly thumbnailed my suggestions and showed them to the director who approved them. Often I would do entire scenes in a series of scribbles like this and talk them over with director Andrew Adamson before I took them to a series of cleaned up drawings like the tonal ones on the right.  While deadlines are u...

As a youngster one of my biggest influences was Frank Frazetta. So given the chance to draw the Edgar Rice Burrough's character John Carter of Mars in the comics was a great chance to bring in as much of Frazetta's  influence as possible...or you can simply interpret as that as swiping as many of his drawings as possible when I was drawing the issues. lol. Here are the pencils for the last issue that Marvel did of the book. (And following the great Gil Kane on tbis series was no simple task either.)  Best, Mike  Next week a new Vozart story.
